Supporting Communities After Cyclone Jasper
When Disaster Strikes, Rotary Responds
In December 2023, Tropical Cyclone Jasper brought record-breaking rainfall and devastating flooding across Far North Queensland. Communities throughout the Douglas Shire—including Mossman, Wonga Beach, Daintree, Degarra, Cape Tribulation and surrounding areas—experienced widespread flooding, road closures, damaged homes, destroyed infrastructure and prolonged isolation. The event became one of the most significant natural disasters to affect the region in recent history.
When communities needed help most, Rotary was there.
The Rotary Club of Douglas FNQ proudly supported relief and recovery efforts through RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service), working alongside Rotary clubs, volunteers, emergency services and local organisations to assist those affected by the disaster.
What is RAWCS?
Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) enables Rotary clubs throughout Australia to deliver humanitarian aid both locally and internationally.
Following Cyclone Jasper, RAWCS established a dedicated Flood Disaster Appeal Fund to provide financial assistance for recovery projects supporting individuals, families and communities affected by the floods in Queensland. Funds raised are directed to approved projects that provide practical assistance where it is needed most.
Helping Our Community Recover
Recovery after a major natural disaster doesn’t end when the floodwaters recede.
Many families faced months of rebuilding homes, replacing possessions, restoring businesses and reconnecting communities that had been cut off by flood damage.
Through the generosity of Rotary members, businesses, community organisations and individual donors, RAWCS funding has helped support recovery initiatives that make a real difference to people’s lives.
These efforts have included assistance with:
- Community recovery projects
- Essential household support
- Recovery grants
- Local volunteer initiatives
- Community resilience program
- Practical assistance for affected families
